At a recent literacy conference, we were asked to think about our earliest literacy moment?
I immediately spiraled back to my elementary years. That's when I became a reader. I can almost smell the books at my elementary school. And when I drift further down memory lane, I can almost see myself detouring to stop at the public library on my way home.
I lived for the new releases of The Babysitters Club series. My experiences with reading as a young girl changed my life. My reading let me envision life outside of my reality.
Some shared memories of a teacher calling them out or not having money to spend at the book fair. A range of experiences, but everyone could clearly cite an impressionable early memory with literacy and how it impacted their life.
What's your story? Was it when the book fair came to your school? Was it a read aloud from your favorite teacher, a series you were drawn to?
I know the power of literacy, and I believe literacy can change our kids' lives. We can start with a little ole picture book.

My favorites were the Dr.Seuss’s books.
